Raga Maand is a popular raga in Indian classical music, particularly in the folk traditions of Rajasthan. It is known for its sweet and melodic nature, often evoking feelings of love and devotion. The raga is associated with semi-classical music and has a unique charm that distinguishes it from purely classical ragas.
Raga Maand is of Audav-Sampurna jaati, meaning it uses five notes in its ascending (aroha) scale and seven notes in its descending (avaroha) scale. The vadi, or the most emphasized note, is Pa, while the samvadi, the second most important note, is Sa.
Raga Maand is traditionally performed during the second prahar of the night, which spans from 9 PM to midnight. This time of performance helps in bringing out the raga’s romantic and soothing qualities, making it ideal for late evening and night renditions.
