This technique involves a continuous, deliberate, and forceful oscillation of a note, transitioning seamlessly from one note to another. It holds significant importance in Indian music, being employed in both vocal and instrumental performances. Unlike “andolan,” gamak is distinctly audible, allowing one to discern its starting and ending points on the notes. Gamak can be described as a faster and repetitive variation of meend. Alternatively, it can be viewed as an alamkara executed in such a manner that a note departs from its original shruti and returns distinctly, within a shorter time frame. Nowadays, gamak is often executed across a span of four or five notes, and sometimes even more.
