Sabir Khan was born in Jodhpur, Rajasthan and hails from the Sikar Gharana of music, which has produced several stalwarts in Indian classical music. He is the ninth generation of his family to take up the Sarangi, following in the footsteps of his iconic father, Ustad Sultan Khan, who was awarded the Padma Bhushan this year.
Sabir Khan is renowned for his delicate mastery of the Sarangi and his playing technique is a rare combination of sur and laya (note and rhythm). He has already imbibed almost all of his father’s repertoire with a similar command and mastery on the Sarangi, making him a chip off the old block.
Sabir Khan now shares the stage with his father in every concert and also performs solo. He has had the honor of performing with artists such as Ustad Zakir Hussain, Pt. Kumar Bose, Pt. Anindo Chatterjee, and many others. In addition to being a classical music artist, he is also into light music and has played with artists like Ghazal maestro Ustad Gulam Ali, Talat Aziz, Asha Bhosle, and recently played in the album of the great Lata Mangeshkar. He has also played in several feature films such as Chameli, Rog, Dor, Anwar, Sanwariya, Chodon Na Yaar, Jodha Akbar, and more.
Sabir Khan has already drawn the attention of many musicians and serious listeners for his mastery presentations at various important venues in India, the UK, the USA, Europe, and beyond.
